When my daughter was 2 years old she wasn't talking yet. She would throw really terrible temper tantrums and often they would be in public. It was so embarrassing and frustrating.
I could not understand why my daughter would behave like this and tried everything that I could think of to stop the tantrums. I dreaded going out in public with her, even short trips to the supermarket were terrifying. I was always afraid of when she would have a tantrum and become uncontrollable.
That was a very trying time in my life and I struggled to understand it. It wasn't until a few years later that I heard about Signing Time. I learned that one of the reasons for temper tantrums is that the child is frustrated because of the inability to be understood. I learned that children can use their hands to communicate long before they can use their voices. When parents and children learn the signs together they can communicate with each other and avoid the tantrums and frustration on both sides.
We began using the Signing Time videos with our son when he was 5 months old. By the time he was 9 months old he was using signs to show us what he wanted. It was so nice to be able to communicate with him from such a young age.
Signing Time has changed our lives and made it much easier to communicate with our baby children. We now use signs we learned from Signing Time all the time. When we need to communicate quietly at church or across a loud and crowded room we can do so effectively. It is really sweet when our youngest hears the car leaving the garage and come out and signs, "I love you" as we pull away.
